EV Charger Installation in Gilbert & Mesa: Load Checks, Panel Capacity and Clean Installs

Before a Level 2 charger goes on your garage wall, one question matters more than which charger you buy: can your panel carry it? Henderson’s Electric Solutions, an electrical contractor based in Queen Creek, AZ (led by licensed electrician Randy Henderson, ROC CR-11 #341452), installs EV chargers in Gilbert and Mesa homes and businesses. We start every job with a load calculation, then find the simplest setup that charges your car without overloading the house, whether that’s a new circuit, load management, or a bigger panel.

Why panel capacity comes first
A Level 2 charger is one of the largest loads in a house, and it often runs for hours at a time. Gilbert and Mesa have everything from older homes with smaller electrical services to newer builds already packed with big appliances, a pool, and a second fridge in the garage. In both cases, the panel decides what’s possible.
- Smaller services: Many older homes have 100- or 150-amp service. Charging can still fit, but it takes planning.
- Full panels: Some panels have the capacity but no open breaker spaces, which is a different problem with different fixes.
- Summer loads: AC runs hard for months here, and a charging plan has to account for the hottest afternoon, not a mild spring day.
How we check your load
- Panel and service: We note the service size, the main breaker, the open spaces, and the panel’s condition.
- Existing loads: We add up the AC, range, dryer, water heater, pool equipment, and the rest of the house using a standard load calculation.
- Your car and driving: Daily miles and how long the car sits at home tell us how much charging speed you actually need.
- The plan: You get a clear recommendation, from a simple new circuit to load management or an upgrade, plus a written estimate.
Charging counts as a continuous load, so the circuit is sized with headroom above the charger’s draw, as the code requires.

What if your panel is close to full?
A tight panel doesn’t automatically mean a new one. Depending on the load calculation, these are the options we compare:
- Lower charger setting: Many chargers can be set to draw less. Overnight, a lower setting still fills most daily commutes.
- Load-management device: Watches the whole house and slows or pauses charging when other big loads run, so the panel never goes over its limit.
- Power-sharing chargers: Two chargers split one circuit, a good fit for two-EV households.
- Subpanel: Adds breaker spaces when the service has capacity but the panel is out of room.
- Panel or service upgrade: When the numbers truly call for it. See our panel upgrades page. We coordinate SRP and APS disconnects and reconnects for the changeover.
Hardwired charger or 240-volt outlet?
Hardwired wall charger
- Permanent, clean install with no plug to wear out
- Often supports a higher charging setting
- Good for outdoor and carport locations with the right rating
NEMA 14-50 outlet
- Works with portable plug-in chargers
- Easy to take the charger with you if you move
- Newer code editions may require GFCI protection, which some chargers don’t get along with
Already bought a charger? Send us the model and we’ll check its installation requirements before the visit.
Choosing where the charger goes
The best spot is where the cable reaches your charge port without stretching across the garage, and where the wire run from the panel is short and clean.
- Garage: The most common spot. We plan around storage, the water heater, and the door track.
- Carport or driveway: Use a charger and wiring rated for outdoor use. Sun and monsoon rain are tough on equipment.
- Detached garage: We size the feeder for the distance and the charger.
- HOA rules: Indoor garage installs usually don’t need approval. Exterior chargers often do, so check your HOA guidelines first.
Permits in Gilbert and Mesa
The Town of Gilbert and the City of Mesa each run their own permit and inspection process. A new charger circuit usually needs a permit in both, and the details depend on the code edition each one has adopted. Henderson’s pulls the permit where one is required, schedules the inspection, and makes sure the install is ready for the inspector.
Two-EV homes, businesses, HOAs and rentals
Charging needs grow. We plan for the second car, or the next five parking spots, from the start.
- Two-EV homes: Power-sharing chargers or separate circuits, depending on capacity
- Businesses: Level 2 charging for staff and customer parking, often as part of a larger project
- HOAs and multifamily: Shared parking layouts with room to add chargers later
- Rentals: Durable, code-compliant installs that work for tenant after tenant
Charging fits naturally into a commercial tenant improvement or a power upgrade. For our general EV page, see EV charger installation.

Frequently asked questions
Can my 100- or 150-amp panel in Gilbert or Mesa handle a Level 2 charger?
Often it can, but only a load calculation tells you for sure. We add up your AC, range, dryer, water heater, pool equipment, and everyday loads, then see how much room is left for charging. If there’s room, we add a dedicated circuit. If it’s tight, a lower charger setting or a load-management device often solves it. A panel upgrade is the answer only when the numbers call for it.
What is load management, and can it help me skip a panel upgrade?
Load management lets the charger share your home’s capacity instead of needing its own big slice. A load-management device watches how much power the house is drawing and slows or pauses charging when other big loads, like the AC, are running. Many chargers can also be set to a lower amperage. For many homes, that’s enough to add charging without a new panel. The device has to be listed for the job and installed to code.
Hardwired wall connector or NEMA 14-50 outlet: which is better?
Both work. A hardwired charger is a permanent install, often allows a higher charging setting, and avoids the wear a plug and outlet see with daily use. A NEMA 14-50 outlet lets you plug in a portable charger and take it with you if you move. Newer code editions call for GFCI protection on many 240-volt garage outlets, which can trip with some chargers, so we’ll talk through what fits your car and garage.
Do I need a permit for an EV charger in Gilbert or Mesa?
A new 240-volt circuit for a charger usually needs a permit. The Town of Gilbert and the City of Mesa each run their own permits and inspections, and requirements depend on the code edition each has adopted. Henderson’s pulls the permit where one is required and schedules the inspection.
Can you install chargers for two EVs, or for my business, HOA or rental?
Yes. For two-EV homes, we look at power-sharing chargers that split one circuit between two cars, or separate circuits when there’s capacity. For businesses, HOAs, and rental properties, we check the available service, lay out circuits for multiple chargers, and plan room to add more later.
Is there a trip fee for EV charger installs in Gilbert or Mesa?
No. Gilbert and Mesa are part of our standard service area, so there’s no trip fee. We look at your panel and parking spot, then give you a written estimate before any work starts.
