What lighting do luxury homes need?
Layered lighting: ambient, task, accent and decorative, each on its own dimming zone. Our usual recommendation is 4000K with dimming on color-selectable fixtures, so the home has clean, natural light by day and can switch to a warmer 2700K or 3000K setting whenever the owners want. How is lighting controlled in a high-end home?
Most luxury projects benefit from whole-home lighting control, with keypads and scenes instead of rows of switches. We install Lutron lighting controls. On the Ponderosa House bar and restaurant tenant improvement in Old Town Scottsdale, a Lutron system with a hub controller handles dimming and scenes, and the same approach works beautifully in a home.
What about panels, capacity and protection?
A load calculation confirms the service can carry everything the design calls for. We usually install Square D or Eaton panels and materials, organized and labeled for easy service. With this much electronics in the home, a whole-home surge protector is essential. The current electrical code requires whole-home surge protection when a home’s electrical service is installed or replaced, so we include it on every job that touches the panel and recommend it for every home. When should I call an electrician?
Call us during design, before plans are final, so the electrical shapes the layout. In a finished home, call right away if you smell burning, see sparks, or a switch, dimmer or panel feels hot.
