Imagine walking into your newly remodeled home after a long day. The space feels different: warmer, more inviting, alive. That first impression comes not just from new finishes or custom cabinetry, but from the lighting. At Henderson’s Electric Solutions, we help homeowners in Queen Creek, Scottsdale, Gilbert, Chandler, Mesa and Paradise Valley plan lighting that turns a good remodel into a great one, and it all starts with a plan.
Short answer: A remodel lighting plan maps every fixture, switch, dimmer and control before demo starts. Start with how you use each room, plan layers of light, choose fixtures and color temperature, group lights into zones and scenes, and confirm your panel can handle the new circuits. Then walk the rough-in before walls close.
Why does lighting matter so much in a luxury remodel?
Lighting spotlights everything else. Tile work in a spa-like bathroom, custom millwork and high-end countertops come alive under well-planned light and fall flat under poor light. Harsh overheads create unflattering shadows, and too little task light makes daily routines frustrating. There’s nothing quite like the first switch flip in a finished remodel, when layers of light wash over the space and the craftsmanship of the cabinet makers, painters and millworkers finally shows. That moment isn’t an accident. It comes from planning.
How do you create a lighting plan for a remodel?
- Start with how you live. Where do you cook, read, work, entertain and relax? What happens in each room at night?
- Walk the space with your designer, GC and electrician. Look at ceilings, beams, windows and furniture placement together.
- Plan the layers. Ambient, task, accent and decorative light, so each room can be bright or soft. Our guide to layered lighting design explains each layer.
- Choose fixtures and color temperature. We usually recommend 4000K with dimming on color-selectable fixtures, with warmer options for living spaces. See our LED color temperature guide.
- Plan switches, dimmers and scenes. Put each layer on its own control, and consider a system like Lutron lighting controls for one-touch scenes.
- Check panel capacity. New lighting, appliances and smart controls add circuits. We’ll confirm your panel can carry them; we usually install Square D or Eaton panels and materials.
- Mark up the plan. Put fixture, switch and control locations on the drawings so every trade works from the same plan.
- Walk the rough-in. Confirm locations while walls are open, when changes are still easy.
If the plan includes a panel upgrade: the current electrical code requires whole-home surge protection when a home’s electrical service is installed or replaced, so we include it on every job that touches the panel and recommend it for every home.
What lighting mistakes should you avoid in a remodel?
- Planning lighting last: waiting until the end forces compromises on fixture placement and wiring
- Relying on one layer: a grid of recessed lights alone leaves rooms flat
- Too few switches or zones: if everything is on one switch, you can’t set a mood
- Mixing color temperatures: keep one color temperature per room so the light blends
- Forgetting task light: kitchens, baths and desks need focused light
- Skipping the outdoors: patio, path and landscape lighting extend your living space after dark
What about outdoor lighting?
Exterior lighting turns a backyard into an evening retreat. Plan patio lighting, step and path lights, and accent light on trees or architectural features at the same time as the interior, so trenching and wiring happen once. Our lighting installation page covers indoor and outdoor work.
How do we work on a remodel?
We start by listening: how you live, entertain and relax, so the lighting supports your daily life. Then we coordinate with your general contractor and the other trades so lighting fits the cabinetry, ceilings and finishes, and we install with care to keep disruption low. Randy, our licensed electrician, is responsible for the work on every job, and every installation is built to code and inspected. For the rest of the electrical decisions in a remodel, read how to plan the electrical before demo day.
Remodel lighting plan checklist
- List how each room is used, day and night
- Plan ambient, task and accent light in every main room
- Choose one color temperature per room
- Put each layer on its own dimmer or zone
- Decide on scene control before rough-in
- Confirm panel capacity for new circuits
- Mark fixture and switch locations on the plans
- Walk the rough-in before drywall
When should I call an electrician?
Call during design, before demo, so lighting is part of the plan from the start. In an existing home, call if lights flicker, dimmers buzz or get hot, or you smell burning. Turn off the circuit only if it’s safe and dry to reach, and don’t open fixtures or switch boxes yourself. We answer emergency calls 24/7.

Frequently asked questions
What is a remodel lighting plan?
It’s a drawing and list showing every fixture, switch, dimmer and control in the remodel, along with the circuits they need, decided before demo so every trade works from the same plan.
When should I plan lighting in a remodel?
Before demo, during design. Lighting affects ceilings, cabinetry and wiring, so it’s easiest and cleanest to plan while walls and ceilings are open.
What’s the most common remodel lighting mistake?
Planning it last. Waiting until the end usually means fewer fixture options, extra patching and a single layer of light that leaves the room flat.
Do I need a panel upgrade for new lighting?
Not always. LED lighting uses little power, but a remodel often adds appliances and circuits too. A load review shows whether your panel has room.
What color temperature should I use in a remodel?
We usually recommend 4000K with dimming on color-selectable fixtures, with warmer options around 2700K to 3000K in living spaces. Keep one color temperature per room.
